Replacing pillows regularly not only prevents allergen build-up but also enhances sleep quality. A general rule of thumb is to replace pillows once every 1-2 years. You'll know it's time for a replacement when your pillows discolour and fail to provide the necessary support. 

 

Q2. What happens if I don’t wash my pillows regularly?

While your pillows and pillowcases may look clean at first glance, there are actually all sorts of tiny but nefarious things going on under the surface. Not washing them regularly results in a build-up of oil, dirt, dead skin cells, and even breakout-causing bacteria.


Over two years, your unwashed pillow can accumulate up to 1/3rd of its weight in bugs and dust mites, regular dust and dead skin cells.

 

Q3. Why do my pillows turn yellow?

One of the most common reasons why pillows turn yellow is sweat. Depending on the type of fabric your pillowcase is made from, sweat can seep through the material. As the sweat dries, it leaves yellow stains behind. In some cases, even when pillow covers are used over pillows; the yellowing occurs.

 

Q4. How often should I wash my pillows?

Unless your pillow is marked “dry clean only” you should wash most pillows about three to four times a year following wash care label instructions. Laundering a pillow isn’t difficult, although it can take a bit of time to get it dry.

On the other hand, your pillowcases should be washed every week along with your sheets and additional bedding.


Q5. Is it okay to wash pillows in a washing machine?

Most pillows, including those filled with cotton and fiberfill, can be cleaned in a washing machine using warm water on the gentle cycle, but it's always a good idea to read the label for cleaning instructions first.


Q6. Can I wash my pillows with bleach?

Yes, to help whiten ridiculously yellow pillows, soak the pillows in a bleach solution before the wash cycle for 30 minutes to an hour. Keep in mind that bleach tends to weaken the fabric, so be careful not to use too much bleach, use bleach too often, or let the pillows soak in bleach for too long.

 

Q7. How can I dry my pillows fast?

Pillows can be dried fast using the following techniques:

 

Using a household dryer

  • Tossing pillows in the dryer immediately

  • Setting your dryer to a very low heat

  • Drying for 45-60 minutes at a time

  • Removing your pillows from the dryer

  • Laying your pillows flat in the sun

Drying your pillow without a dryer

  • Choosing the perfect sunny day to dry your pillow

  • Hanging your pillow on a clothesline

  • Fluffing and turning your pillow every hour or two

 

Q8. How do I make my pillows fluffy again?

A tennis ball or two, tied in a clean pillowcase perks up a flattened pillow made from polyester, fiberfill or cotton. 

  • Place the pillow and the knotted pillowcase into a dryer set to low heat and tumble them together, checking after 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Remove the materials once the pillows reach the desired level of fluffiness.

In case you do not have a dryer at your disposal, you can simply fluff up the pillow with both your hands until it reaches the desired level of fluffiness.

 

Q9. What is the average lifespan of a pillow?

The average lifespan of a pillow is one to two years. Replacement is highly recommended for hygienic and sanitary reasons. Most pillows accumulate dust and microbes among the fill, even after they are washed. 

 

Q10. Is it better to have a soft or a firm pillow?

Side sleepers do best with firmer pillows because they need to fill the space between their neck and shoulders to get proper alignment. Stomach sleepers like the softest pillows. Soft to medium is best for them because they do not want their head to be raised too high and cut off circulation.
